10 Great Covenant Relationships in the Bible
- Covenant between God and Noah: Genesis 9:8.
God had asked Noah to build an ark because He was going to destroy mankind and all creature from the earth because the earth was corrupt. According to scripture, Noah was a just man and he walked with God in righteousness. So Noah built the ark according to God’s commandment. This covenant was made with Noah after God destroyed the earth with flood. Then God promised never again to destroy all life on earth by flood, and He created the rainbow as the sign of this everlasting covenant.
- Covenant between God and Abraham; genesis 15:18;
God had called Abraham to leave his family and his country and go to a strange land. ( the promise land) It was during this journey that Abraham had an encounter with God who promise to be with him always and that his descendants will be like the stars in the sky and God also said He will give Abraham the land in which he was as an inheritance. And Abraham believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness. But then, when Abraham asked “ how will I know that I will inherit it”? then God made a covenant with Him in which he explained how his descendants will go to slavery and God will deliver them and bring them to this land. the promises of God to Abraham and his descendants to give them the land in which Abraham was at that time which will later be called “the promised land” was sealed in this covenant.
- At Sinai, Moses sprinkled the blood of animals on the altar and upon the people who entered into covenant with God. Ex 24:3-8
A short time after leaving the land of Egypt, the children of Israel camped at the base of Mount Sinai. And God made a covenant, with the Ten Commandments as the foundation of that covenant. Exodus 20:18-20. After receiving the law, Moses spoke the words of the covenant to all the people, and the people agreed to obey. Moses then wrote the conditions of the covenant down, offered sacrifice to God, and then sprinkled both the book and the people with blood to seal the covenant. Exodus 24:8.
- Covenant between David and the children of Israel 2 Samuel 5:3
King David made a covenant with the elders of Israel when they came to Hebron ask him to rule over them. Thus, He made a covenant with the children of Israel and they anointed him King over all Israel.
- Covenant between God and David 2 Sam 7:12-13
This covenant between God and king David in which David and his descendants where established as the royal hair to the throne of the nation of Israel 2 Sam 7:12-13
- The covenant of Christ ( The new covenant) Hebrews 9:15
The death of Christ ushered in the new covenant under which we are justified by God’s Grace and Mercy, which is now possible to have the true forgiveness of sins. Jesus himself is the mediator of this better covenant between God and man. ( Heb 9:15) Jesus’ sacrificial death served as the pledge, which God made to us to seal this new covenant.
The new covenant is the new agreement God has made with mankind, based on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The concept of a new covenant originated with the promised of Jeremiah that God would accomplish for his people what the old covenant could not do.
- Covenant between the children of Israel and the Gibeonites Joshua 9:1-9
Then the men of Israel took some of their provisions but they did not ask counsel of the Lord. (Josh 9:14) so Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them to let them live; and the rulers of the congregation swore to them.
Without consulting God Israel entered into a covenant or peace treaty with the Gibeonites
- The covenant between Abraham and Abimelech Gen 21:27
Abimelech approached Abraham and asked that he swear to an oath, promising that they will deal faithfully with each other. Abraham agreed with Abimelech but mentioned his dissatisfaction that a well had been closed off to him by Abimelech savants. Abimelech however responded that he had known nothing about the incident. So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech and the two men made a covenant
- Covenant between David and Jonathan, 1 Samuel 20:16
And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 1. Sam 18:1, Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, and to his bow, and to his girdle. Verse 3-4.
So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David
- Covenant between God and the descendant of Abraham. Jeremiah 31:33 ( the old covenant)
But this is a new covenant that I will make with the whole of Israel after those days, says the Lord; I will put my law in their minds and write it in their heart, and I will be their God and they shall be my people. The concept of a new covenant originated with the promise in Jeremiah that God would accomplish for His people what the old covenant had failed to do. Under this new covenant, God will write His law on human hearts.
